When moving, don't forget to pack your sense of humor

Our household goods were delivered on the 15th. For all you Big Bang Theory fans out there, there's an episode where two of the main characters are going on their first date but don't know if it's a good idea or a bad idea. They're presented with the scenario of Schrodinger's cat, a cat in a box with a pellet of poison set to explode randomly. The paradox is that until the box is opened, the cat can be considered both alive and dead, as can their relationship until they actually go out on a date.

Well, let me introduce you to Schrodinger's Moving Service, which apparently we had, wherein the contents of each box can be considered both intact and broken until you open the box to know for sure.

It's nice to have our stuff, but I can tell the packers didn't care about doing a good job. It was a mistake that many moving companies stopped using bubble wrap. It was so good for stress relief when you're unpacking and start noticing how much has been damaged or lost.

We're missing a TV, soccer ball, a large jewelry box, basketball, and some of Sophia's toys. I'm pretty sure they also misplaced my sense of humor. They didn't pack our nice stuff like art and china very well, either. Our big screen TV was dented and will have to be replaced.

Also, the inside of one of the boxes was soaking wet. I don't know how that happened, since nothing in there had water in it. Some of my medical books were in it and are ruined, but what really broke my heart was that all our wedding photos, CD's, and albums were in that box. I cried for about an hour on Saturday. I know it's just "stuff," but I cared about it and trusted the movers to do a good job.

We put our photos out on tables to dry off. For the most part, the colors of the photos are OK, but they're all warped. So sad.

But enough about moving; I need my blood pressure to go back down. I started work a couple of weeks ago. The hospital is so, so nice. It's only a year old or so, so everything is clean and kid-friendly.  I work in the shorter building on the left, 4th floor. The tall building in the background is the administration building. I don't have an office yet, though. I guess that doesn't matter, since I won't be seeing patients for another couple of weeks until I get credentialed. (That means that the hospital has to have all these documents proving I'm a doctor, licensed, competent, etc.) I'm excited and nervous to start. I'm also sad to be leaving my baby girl at home but I know it's only temporary. My first day back at work, Mike texted me a video of Sophia laughing. It was her first laugh. It was truly a bittersweet moment, as I realized that was the first of her "firsts" that I missed. I ducked into a bathroom and bawled for about 5 minutes. It's hard to be a working mom when I'd rather be a "just mom."
I love our new ward. The people here are so, so friendly. We've already had two dinner invites from people. There are a lot of French speakers in this ward...people from Africa who came to the US and joined the Church, mostly. There's a family who converted a couple of years ago from the Hindu religion. It's definitely a melting pot but everyone seems to get along well.

  1. Clever, clever post. I read it out loud to Darrell as he was busy with ..... oh you know - stuff - and we both laughed out loud. We don't mean to laugh at the situation, just at your great humor as you wrote about your pain. You definitely packed your sense of humor.

  2. Ugh. I'm so sorry! I've been thinking about you ever since you called and asked about the packers/movers. I was hoping that things would turn out better than the first boxes turned out. I hope that you're able to replace your wedding photos and that the moving company replaces the rest of the stuff. What a headache for you! Having just gone through the moving experience I'm totally feeling your pain.
